Georgisk Ortodox Kyrkomusik

This course in Georgian Orthodox Church Music will provide participants with an introduction to this rich and vibrant musical tradition. The course will focus on developing the fundamental skills necessary to perform Georgian Orthodox Church Music, including sight-reading, vocal technique, aural skills, and knowledge of chant traditions. Participants will also learn about the historical, cultural, and regional context of Georgian chant, and gain an understanding of its different schools and styles, namely the Kakhetian, the Imeretian, and the Gurian. Through participation in choir performances, chant in the context of liturgical worship, and individual study, participants will develop a strong sense of musical expression and cultural authenticity, and an appreciation for the role of Georgian Orthodox Church Music in the cultural and religious heritage of Georgia. The course will take place in a supportive and immersive learning environment, allowing participants to fully engage with the music and the broader cultural and liturgical context in which it is rooted.

 

By the end of the course, participants will demonstrate:

  • the ability to understand the basics of Western staff notation, and to collectively perform selected pieces with expression and accuracy.
  • development of proper vocal technique and mastery of the melodic and rhythmic nuances of Georgian Orthodox Church Music, with an emphasis on expression, collaboration, and cultural authenticity.
  • knowledge of (and identification with) the historical, cultural, religious, and regional context of Georgian Orthodox Church Music, and an understanding of the different schools and styles of the music and their place within the larger cultural landscape.
  • the ability to participate in the performance of Georgian Orthodox Church Music as part of a choir, and to appreciate the role of the music in the cultural and religious heritage of Georgia.
