The Liturgical Role of the Deacon

From the time of the earliest Christian community to the present, deacons have played an integral part in the life of the Church (Acts 6:1-6). A deacon in the Orthodox Church plays a vital role both in the liturgy and in the pastoral care of the Church community.

This course introduces students to the role of the deacon within the worship services of the Byzantine Churches, with a focus on the rubrics and the prayers. The main focus is the Divine Liturgy, the evening and morning services, and the major feasts, but the course will also give consideration to the other sacraments in the Church’s life. In addition, students will become acquainted with the liturgical cycle and the classical texts of Orthodox spirituality.
