Religious Educator Program in Eastern Christian Studies

Master of Theology (1 Year), 60 ECTS with an additional 1 year of full-time study at Folkhögskola.

A religious educator is a teacher and theologian who plays a key role in the life of the Church and in its future development. An educator inspires and stimulates clergy and laity to deepen their understanding and to relate their faith to the world outside the Church. Therefore, an educator must have an in-depth understanding of the Church’s tradition, as well as the tools which will allow him or her to communicate that understanding to others, and use theology as a tool in supporting the development of civil society in relation to representative governance.

Students on this course receive a theological education at master’s level in the Department of Eastern Christian Studies at Stockholm School of Eastern Christian Studies. In addition, they learn how to create a safe and stimulating learning environment within a Church congregation or a diocese and how to encourage participation in the life of the Church by clergy and lay members, as well as learning how the church can participate in public discourse, particularly in relation to governments on local, regional, national, and international levels. The successful student will be well equipped to help the Church to meet the challenges it faces today, both within ecclesiastical governance as well as within society.

The program can be taken over two years (for students who already have a bachelor’s degree in a theological or a biblical subject) or over two and a half years (for students who already have a bachelor’s degree in a subject within the humanities other than theology). See requirements on your right.

In case of successful completion, the program will start:

  • January 2026 – for those applicants who are meeting all the requirements;
  • October 6, 2025 – pre-Master Program: for those applicants who need to gain up to 60 ECTS in Theology/Religious Studies, including writing an independent thesis // or a final research paper.

Cost of Study

Students at Stockholm School of Eastern Christian Studies and at Sankt Ignatios folkhögskola are not required to pay tuition fees if they are citizens of Sweden or another EU country, if they have been granted permission to live in Sweden, or if they have been exempted from fees via institutional agreement.
