Mahlietay (Cantor) Training Program in the Tewahedo Tradition

The Cantor’s Training Program is designed for students who wish to study the chants and hymns of St. Yared.  The course is taught in in Ge’ez, Tigrigna and Amharic.

It takes time to master these chants and hymns, especially for those who have no prior knowledge of them and for that reason the course lasts between 4 and 6 years.

Alongside the course on chants and hymns, students study 8 other theological training modules: Dogmatic Theology, Church History I, Bible Study, Patrology, Church History II, Canon Law and Church Administration, Ecclesiology, and Homiletics. These studies will enable the candidate to effectively administer the sacraments and offer pastoral care.

Students will also learn how to use hymnal instruments like prayer sticks, drums, sistra, etc.

To be enrolled in the program, students must have successfully completed the Deacon Training Program in the Tewahedo Tradition or an equivalent level of liturgical studies.
