Youhanna Nessim Youssef is a senior lecturer in the Department of Eastern Christian Studies,  where he will teach Eastern Christian History, Patristics and the Coptic language.  Youhanna is from Egypt where he graduated Bachelor of Commerce (Ain Shams University) in 1982. Later, inspired by his passionate interest in Coptic Studies, he studied in the Institute of Coptic Studies in Cairo from where he received a diploma in Coptology. He then travelled to France, where he joined Montpellier University III and he gained his doctorate there in 1993 for his studies on Julius of Akfahs.

He has lengthy experience in research and teaching. For nearly two decades, (1999-2019) he was research fellow of the centre for Early Christian Studies at the Australian Catholic University. He subsequently taught at Saint Athanasius College (University of Divinity Australia) where he taught Patristics, Coptic Archaeology, Coptic History, Coptic Language and New Testament Greek. He served as an expert in the The Netherlands Project for Conservation of Icons in the Middle East, where he taught Art History, Coptology and Archaeology to restorers.

Youhanna is member of several scientific Associations: Société d’Archéologie Copte (Cairo, Egypt); Association Internationale d’Etudes Patristiques (Paris, France); International Association of Coptic Studies (Muenster, Germany); Association Francophone de Coptologie (Strasbourg, France). He is also a member of the editorial board of the Bulletin de la Société d’Archéologie Copte, Coptica, Coptologia.

His research interests cover the following fields:  Coptic Literary texts; Arabic studies and early Arabic texts (specially those written by Christians); Church History and Early Christian texts; Byzantine history; Egyptology, (especially the continuity and discontinuity in Egypt between Pharaonic and Coptic);  Archaeology and the identification of excavated monuments.
