Welcome to Sankt Ignatios Coptic Orthodox Seminary

It may seem a long way from the ancient monasteries and churches of Egypt to a busy Swedish town like Södertälje, but the seminarians share the same emphasis on prayer, contemplation and service as their hallowed ancestors

The Coptic seminary started its life in 2015 with the blessing of H.H. Pope Tawadros II, who was in Sweden that year to receive the award of the Order of Sankt Ignatios. Since then, under the leadership of Fr. Joseph Gobran and with the blessing of His Grace Anba Abakir, bishop of Scandinavia, the seminary has grown from 3 students at its inception to more than 150 in 2019. The Seminary has been very active in reaching students from outside Sweden. We started our affiliated seminary in Vienna in 2019/2020 and we have hosted students from the UK and Egypt who have been studying on our BTh, MTh and ThD programs. We have a high profile in the Coptic community, partly through our major research project in collaboration with the Coptic Patriarchate.

Life at the Coptic Seminary

The Coptic seminary prepares a seminarian to be not only a priest but a Church leader and educator, someone who can inspire a community by showing what it means to be an active Christian within the body of Christ. For this reason, the life of a seminarian is necessarily a busy one. The day begins and ends with prayer (matins and vespers), and during the day our students travel, listen to lectures, read books, write papers, participate in liturgies, discuss with fellow students and take part in the communal everyday life of the seminary (cooking and cleaning!). The environment of the seminary provides an atmosphere of monastic life, characterised by silence, peace, education, prayer and work, in which the student finds a safe and nurturing home. The seminary is located in Södertälje, Stockholm.
